As Angelina Jolie sports a corset on the cover and inside pages of Vogue’s December 2010 UK edition and as burlesque entertainment begins to make a huge comeback, one might be taken with thinking of the past year in lingerie news, trends, and just about anything else. After all, December is generally the month for reflection and January is the month for a whole round of ‘new’ and ‘turning over a new leaf’. Several noted things have happened in 2010 so far and who knows, perhaps more notable things may happen yet. As far as lingerie is concerned, though, we’re all waiting for the spring season to start and there’s no better time for a recap.
January – Amy Winehouse quits drugs, takes up lingerie shopping instead to the tune of nearly 5 grand a trip; in an effort to battle wrinkly cleavage (we’ve all seen this, even if just a glimpse of it) Dutch designers announce the intended unveiling of a bra that expands and contracts with body heat at the Paris trade fair; 2010 trends were announced and it was said that “suede is the new leather”, funnily enough no one apparently thought to inform the designers of fetish wear – most of its still made out of leather, vinyl, and latex; it’s predicted that lingerie sales will be one of the few things that defy the recession (it’s now the end of the year and it seems this prediction was mostly true); Kate Winslet seen modelling hot lingerie for Harper’s Bazaar; in a world where the majority of women look for a way to downsize their cabooses, bottom padding underpants are reported as a hot ticket item in Australia; Lady Gaga’s bodystocking is revealed to be a $40 item from Bed, Bath & Beyond – not the 1950s vintage piece it was thought to be.
February – Lingerie, once again, announced as great Valentine’s Day gift (surprise, surprise); Lingerie as outerwear is deemed a “hot fashion” trend, but most regular people see this as revisiting Madonna’s look in the 90s (sorry, Gaga, that knickers on the outside look is out dated); former lingerie model, Angie Valencia has warrant issued for her arrest as the head of a world-wide drug trafficking organization; Sony Music sued over Beyonce’s underwear in a music video by Triumph who claims that her outfit looks too much like one created for them by a Bulgarian designer, judge agrees; Megan Fox announces that she doesn’t care for the outcome of the photos taken for the Armani underwear ad campaign and complains that she looks “too sexy”, too much like a 1940s pinup girl, and not “classy” enough (umm, isn’t that the whole point of an underwear ad?)
March–Ultimo announces 30 year old Kelly Brook as their new lingerie face & body; Brook also announces that lingerie pictures will leave her untouched and that she insists that she isn’t perfect, and most portrayals of women are “unrealistic” and that it would be “cool to show what I look like in the raw” – bravo!; for the first time in 50 years, Hugh Hefner gives the OK to sell the world famous bunny suits but only from UK lingerie and sex toy store, Ann Summers and for a limited time; study shows that “real women” in lingerie ads can make women feel worse than rake thin models (who knew?)

August–Playtex asks Selina Scott to be their “brand ambassador” by modelling bras, it wouldn’t be news if she wasn’t 59 years old – well done;Ultima lingerie line boss Michelle Mone, after losing over 80 lbs., decides to model her own lingerie for a charity shoot despite feeling “sick” at showing off her body publicly – all in the name of a good cause; the Kardashian sisters announce that they’ve paired with Jupi Corp., an Australian design company to design a line of lingerie that should be released early in 2011.
September–Coffee table book reveals some interesting things about what goes on beneath a Syrian burka, included are tidbits letting the western world know that most lingerie designers are men who size pieces with the use of mannequins and that you’ll find, commonplace, underpants that play music; Victoria’s Secret releases new line called “The Nakeds” that purports to feel like you’ve got nothing on (some greatly disagree); Medellin, a Columbian lingerie maker, enters the US market for the first time; Jealousy International, a Chinese lingerie company, makes waves (and not necessarily the good kind, nor in good taste) when they release an ad campaign on the anniversary of Princess Di’s death with the Princess of Wales wearing lingerie so people can “feel the romance of British royalty”; La Vie en Rose releases the Muse collection in all of its Canadian lingerie stores, the line is comprised of luxury and beautiful corrective bras for women who’ve undergone mastectomies.
